Advanced CNC Routing: When to Switch from Mozaik to Vectric Aspire

Two great programs. One question: which part belongs in which?

For day-to-day cabinet production, Mozaik is hard to beat. It turns a design into nested sheets and machine-ready G-code with very little hand-holding, and for boxes, doors, drawers, and standard hardware boring, that automation is exactly what you want. But every shop eventually hits a part that Mozaik wasn’t built to handle. That’s the moment to reach for Vectric Aspire. The trick is recognizing it before you’ve burned an hour fighting the wrong tool.

If the part is a configured cabinet component, stay in Mozaik. The moment it becomes custom 3D geometry or demands toolpath-level control, switch to Aspire.

What Mozaik Is Built For

Mozaik is a parametric cabinet engine first and a CAM tool second. Its strength is that the geometry is driven by your cabinet definitions, so production stays fast and consistent:

  • Automatic nesting and optimized sheet layouts across a full job
  • Standard 2D operations: dados, rabbets, drilling, hinge and slide boring
  • Construction-driven parts that update when you change a cabinet’s dimensions
  • Repeatable, batch-friendly output with minimal per-part setup

As long as a part fits that parametric, mostly-2.5D model, there’s no reason to leave Mozaik. You’d only be giving up speed.

Where Mozaik Runs Out of Road

The limits show up when a part stops being a configured cabinet component and becomes a piece of custom geometry or artwork. Watch for these signals:

  • True 3D surfaces — carved corbels, raised-panel profiles beyond the stock library, dished trays, or any part needing a 3D finishing pass
  • Decorative relief work — logos, signage, textured backgrounds, or grain patterns that require a modeled relief, not just a cut line
  • Toolpath-level control — when you need to dictate stepover, ramp strategy, climb vs. conventional, or multi-tool roughing-and-finishing sequences by hand
  • V-carving and engraving — lettering and inlays where bit geometry drives the result
  • One-off art panels — parts that will never be parametric and don’t belong in your cabinet library at all

  • A full relief-modeling toolset for sculpting genuine 3D shapes

A Practical Hybrid Workflow

You don’t have to pick one tool for the whole job. The most efficient approach in most shops is to let each program do what it’s best at:

  • Run all standard boxes, doors, and drawer parts through Mozaik as usual
  • Pull only the custom or sculpted parts out into Aspire
  • Model and generate toolpaths for those parts, then post to the same machine
  • Keep your nesting in Mozaik so material usage across the job stays optimized

Quick Decision Checklist

Open Aspire if you answer “yes” to any of these:

  • Does the part need a true 3D carved or sculpted surface?
  • Is there a logo, relief, or texture that has to be modeled, not just cut?
  • Do you need to control stepover, ramp, or tool sequencing by hand?
  • Is it V-carving, engraving, or inlay work?
  • Is it a one-off that will never become a parametric cabinet part?

Knowing exactly where that line falls is what saves you time, material, and a lot of frustration at the machine.
